About
A native of Mill Valley, CA, MALIA LAM graduated from UCLA with a BA in dance and a minor in Spanish. After graduating in 2018, she moved straight to NYC and worked with the following companies over the years: Yu.S.Artistry, An Nuo Spiritual DanceArt, and Muniz & Makers Dance Company and performed choreography by Vive Khamsingsavath, Jordan Ryder, SarAika, Alex Schmidt, Newbrese, Colin Heininger, Robert Mark Burke, Joseph Heitman, Katie Messina, and Animus. Malia has had the opportunity to dance in places such as Koresh Dance Come Together Festival, Nazareth College MAD, Dixon Place and Bridge for Dance. Malia currently is a company member with One Day Dance and also works as their Director of Administration. Within the past two years, she started focusing more on her own choreographic works as well. She debuted a full evening length dance show "Depth Deception" at Triskelion Arts, a short film with John Trunfio shown in Green Spaces Virtual Fertile Grounds Show, a duet co-choreographed with Alex Schmidt for Forza’s Emerging Artist Showcase, a short excerpt for One Day Dance and a 20 minutes solo in a split bill at Arts On Site. You can also find Malia occasionally rocking out on stage singing and dancing with her band, Bone Head Stew.
Outside of performing and choreographing, Malia is a certified GYROTONIC® and GYROKINESIS® instructor and has taught both this method and floorwork contemporary dance classes all over the city including at Martha Graham School of Dance. Malia discovered the GYROTONIC® method in 2017. She was hooked on the holistic movement practice immediately. Malia received her GYROTONIC® Level 1 certification 2019 and since then completed certifications in GYROTONIC® Applications for Dancers Level 1 and Level 2, Jumping Stretch Board Archway Specialized Equipment and the GYROKINESIS® method. Malia has taught in many places all over Manhattan including Gyrotonic studios, dance schools and a physical therapy office, where she worked closely with the doctors to tailor sessions with her patients for their specific recovery needs.
Malia is now creating her own dance classes that combine dance and GYROKINESIS® techniques and some classes she invites collaborators to teach their own dance phrase at the end of class to practice the GYROKINESIS® technique within new styles.
